Salima Necklace

Salima Necklace

$495.00

Salima is an Arabic name that means “to be safe”.

The focal element in this necklace is a large Berber Southern Cross, a traditional motif revered by many nomadic tribes across Northern Africa. It is named after the Southern Cross constellation, which guides tribal groups safely through the desert during their nightly sojourns. The blue, green, and yellow enamel finish on the pendant is a classic form of Berber jewellery; this particular piece also incorporates burgundy red, which adds a wonderful pop of colour. Intricate and flamboyant, this traditional Berber cross pendant has been handcrafted by master-artisans with great attention to detail. The granulation work suggests some Mauritanian influence.

Sunset Dumortierite stone beads anchor the Berber pendant. The prominent colour of this lovely stone is deep blue with varying tones of the sunset; it is named after a French palaeontologist M. E. Dumortier (1803-1873)and is mined in South Africa. It is known as “The Stone of Order” as itenhances organizational abilities, self-discipline and orderliness. It also promotes a positive attitude in all life situations, and gives one courage and trust. It helps to gain control and understanding in our own lives, and is believed to ease panic and fear. Another interesting attribute of the stone is its apparent ability to enhance intellectual thought, amplify psychic abilities and encourage creativity.

Two red glass beads from Ghana, separated from the Dumortierite stone by oxidized silver daisy beads from India, enhance the red tones from the Berber cross. These beads are made by the Krobo tribe using finely ground glass commonly made from recycled broken bottles and scrap glass. The crushed glass is mixed with pigments to produce a wide array of colours.  The powdered glass is poured into a clay mould that is soaked in kaolin, which is fired in a kiln oven to make these wonderful beads.

These beads are personally sourced by Shikha during her travels around the world and this statement necklace is assembled in her studio.
