Dookapo Necklace

Dookapo Necklace

$355.00

Dookakpo is an Ijaw name from the Niger Delta that means “peaceful world”.

This gorgeous pendant is made from a dried inactive pod from a tree found on the East African coast. It has been inlaid with brass and aluminium to create a beautiful raised dome design and is transformed into this stunning pendant. The chocolate brown pod itself is beautifully smooth and has a luscious sheen.

Round beads of African Turquoise, separated by sea green Ghana glass discs, evoke a mood of serenity. In popular legends, Turquoise is believed to attract money, success and love. Its powers include protection, courage, friendship, and luck. As a healing stone, it is said to relax the mind and ease mental tension. The beauty and power of Turquoise has been highly prised as an amulet for power, luck and protection in various cultures - from the ancient Egyptians to the Aztecs and Incas of South America and Native North Americans. According to Hindu and Persian mystics, it was very lucky to have Turquoise on hand at the time of a new moon. He who gazed at the moon on pratipada(the first day after new-moon) and then looked at the stone was destined to enjoy increased wealth and protection from evil.

The translucent green glass beads are made using centuries old methods by the Krobo tribe from Ghana. It involves pouring fragments of recycled glass into reusable moulds and firing them in a very hot clay kiln. Once baked, the beads are cooled and then polished by rubbing them vigorously against each other. These are separated by gold plated Tibetan daisy spacers which enhances the brass decoration on the pendant for a touch of opulence.

These beads are personally sourced by Shikha during her travels around the world and this statement necklace is assembled in her studio.
