LOOM KATHA

WE ARE IBU IN ACTION:

  • The Ibu Foundation partnered with Loom Katha to embark on the Himroo Revival Project which focuses on teaching women the almost extinct art of Himroo weaving. There are only two weavers in the entire country that know this technique, so they have agreed to lead training sessions funded by the foundation so that local women can carry on this art form.

India is home to over 11 million handloom weavers, with over 200 different types of indigenous weaves, higher than any country in the world. Loom Katha is a play on the Hindi word “Lok Katha” meaning “Folk Tale” - weaving that is a story of the people, by the people, and for the people of India.

Loom Katha creates contemporary, fashionable and smart apparel for today's woman of substance using heritage weaving techniques.

Loom Katha is currently working with close to a 100 weavers in W. Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and have been instrumental in reviving the rare Himroo weave of Aurangabad from the 13th century. This technique had ceased to be used until Loom Katha’s founder, Arushi Chowdhury Khanna went and convinced the handful of elders that still remembered how to Himroo weave to teach young women in the community the technique. With funding from the Ibu Foundation, women are training in Himroo and keeping this ancient technique alive.
